The Scoop: Analysing Belly's 'Mumble Rap' Mixtape
In October, Canadian rapper, Belly, dropped his 2017 mixtape dubbed 'Mumble Rap'. The mixtape perfectly justifies why Belly has become such a prominent rapper in such a short period of time. His lyrics are nothing short of magical and he has a flow that is scarce these days. What some listeners don't understand about Belly is that his lyrics have a certain depth to them that can make his songs sound very random and out of place, however, if you listen closely, you'll recognize that each bar has a significance that comes candidly from his heart.

The first time I listened to 'Mumble Rap', I was amazed by the unique beats and instrumentals used. Take the track, 'Mumble Rap' for example. In the background of the song, there is a choir singing a 'La La La' throughout the entire track giving it a very deep, gospel-like vibe, somewhat resembling the theme of Kendrick's DAMN. album. Now jump to 'Bobby Brown' where the beat features a faint flute and guitar instrumental in accordance with the beat as well as a deep hum seconds ahead of the chorus.
Now, let's just cover lyrics for a minute. Belly's track 'Clean Edit', was written in response to who he refers to as 'Soccer Moms' for shaming him and his lyrics after an explicit performance at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto. In the song, Belly raps a series of curse words (Fu*k h*es, t*ts, a*s, bi*ch, c*nt) for the sole purpose of showing the 'Soccer Moms' that he is who he is and he won't change for anyone. Some may interpret this as Belly being ignorant and disrespectful, however, the lyric shows that he's true to his lyrics and believes in his music no matter who criticizes him.

In his track, 'The Come Down Is Real Too', Belly raps 'The come up is real, but so is the come down'. In this line, Belly is essentially expressing that rising to success is an amazing feeling, however, you can't reach that level of success without failing and having your lows.
Overall, Belly has undeniably clever lyrics, some with a lesson and others telling a story. Personally, I forsee Belly being one of the most influential rappers of our generation and will go down in history as a story-teller as well as a lyrical genius.
